www.aana.com/aanajournalonline Upcoming Book: Ira P. Gunn To the editor: At the upcoming Annual Congress in Salt Lake City the AANA will release the newly published book Ira P. Gunn, Nurse Anesthetist. For my co-editors and me, work on the book was a true labor of love and an exploration of the genius Ira was. We each knew Ira in different ways and at somewhat different times, but we each learned from and sought to incorporate her essence in our lives and in this book. Within the pages we have endeavored to bring that essence and brilliance to you; Ira’s progenies and legacies. Ira worked tirelessly to advance the profession of nurse anesthesia and nursing as a whole as a clinician, educator, consultant and unyielding advocate, as both a member of the military and as a civilian. Her thoughts and writings were so prescient that many of her ideas are still as valid today as when she wrote them decades ago. Some of her work is scholarly, some personal. It is always thoughtful and circumspect, often feisty. Yet the thread of caring for her fellow humans and particularly her colleagues, students and profession is evident throughout. Through her book chapters, journal articles, OpEds, letters to the editor, emails and even her voice at the microphone at so many AANA business meetings, it is our hope that each of you–her colleagues, friends, students and particularly the students of the future–can gain a better understanding of the history, present and future of the profession and world Ira loved and irrevocably changed. Please stop by the AANA PR booth in the exhibit hall to order your copy, share memories of Ira, and learn more about this icon of the profession.

A significant reduction was noticed in the amount of vecurenium needed to maintain steady neuromuscular blockade at 20% twitch height (Tl> in patients given nicardipine intraoperatively. Bolus ajection of either nicardipine or d.iltlazem during constant infusion of yecuronium produced transient depression of Tl and the train-offour ratio CTOFR). Reversal of neuromuscular blockade wtth a choline...
متن کاملA Diazo Coupling Method for the Electron Microscopic Localization of Cholinesterase
The presence of cholinesterase at the myoneural junction of intercostal muscle has been demonstrated in both light and electron microscopic preparations. A new simultaneous diazo coupling technique using alpha-naphthyl acetate as substrate and "hexazonium pararosanilin" as coupler has been applied to cold formalin-fixed tissues. After postfixation in buffered osmium tetroxide the sites of ester...
متن کاملRecent advances in neuromuscular block during anesthesia
Muscle relaxation is a routine part of anesthesia and has important advantages. However, the lingering effects of muscle relaxants in the postoperative period have historically been associated with postoperative adverse events. Neuromuscular reversal, together with neuromuscular monitoring, is a recognized strategy to reduce the rate of postoperative residual relaxation but has only marginally ...
متن کاملPostoperative residual neuromuscular block: a survey of management.
BACKGROUND To avoid postoperative residual neuromuscular block there is a need for a change in clinician's attitude towards monitoring and reversal. This study aims to evaluate changes of perioperative neuromuscular block management during the last decade in our institution and to quantify the incidence of postoperative residual neuromuscular block. METHODS Patients receiving intermediate-act...
